Recycling Your Computer

Like many people, I have several old unusable computers and monitors taking up space in my home. I'd love to get rid of them but I refuse to put them in the dumpster or on the curb for pickup because they contain dangerous and hazardous materials. I was excited to discover an economical and safe disposal solution. Under the Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES) program, some recycling centres are registered to accept electronic waste at no cost to the consumer. Any items that fall within the Phase 1 category are accepted free of charge. This includes things like computer terminals, desktop and laptop computers, hard drives, keyboards, mice, monitors, televisions, printers, and more. Other items that are not part of the OES program may be accepted for a small fee per pound, depending on the recycling company. This includes things like mp3 players, modems, copiers, telephones, cell phones, cameras, video recorders, etc. All items are recycled in accordance with environmental principles. This is a much safer and healthier option than tossing your old electronics into the garbage. If you live in a good-sized city in Ontario, do a Google search and you are likely to find a recycling centre where you can drop off those old computers for free. Even if you don't live in Ontario, try doing a search for recycling programs that may exist in your own community. |
